Climate and Health Journal is an internationally peer-reviewed journal that aims to serve as an effective tool for the academicians and researchers working on the fields of climate, climate change, environment and other related fields, and researchers expert in their fields within non-governmental organisations (NGOs), public sector organisations and international organisations to share their scientific assessments, research findings and analyses.</p> <p>There is no scientific periodical publication that handles the topics that intersectoral from the fields of climate and health in an inter-disciplinary and inter-sectoral approach in Turkey. The scientific projections for the future and the COVID-19 pandemic we are experiencing right now reveal that the processes impacting public health based on climate change are on the rise, and point out the need for strengthening the cooperation among different disciplines within the field of climate and health. In this direction, it is crucial that these two disciplines are handled together.</p> <p> </p> A Study on Passive House Potential of Countries-The Case of Germany/ Sachsen Region 2021-07-15T08:21:06+00:00 Dilara Karabulut Semiha Kartal <p>Today, as a result of energy consumption, CO<sub>2</sub> emissions increased and global climate problems formed with this. At the same time, with the increasing population density, intended for alternative ways to reduce energy dependence started to be sought. As stated in the Energy Performance in Buildings Directive (EPBD), it is significant to design energy-efficient manner buildings that use up approximately 40% of the total energy consumed in Europe. In Turkey, the scope of energy performance improvement policies in building energy consumption while reducing protecting user well-being, environment and nature of taking attention existing resources are sustainable and cost-effective to exploit away Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) were targeted. In addition to ensuring energy efficiency in Passive Houses, it is inevitable to use renewable energy sources. These Passive houses, which provide high comfort conditions with low energy consumption, are important in terms of guiding the designs. The passive home design approach can be a solution proposal for new structures in terms of energy performance as it can apply to existing buildings. The Passive House design approach can apply to existing buildings something like a solution proposal for new structures in terms of energy performance. Such applications can contribute to energy saving in the transformation studies in countries where the existing building potential is high. In this study, Passive House approaches in Turkey with Europe and other countries were evaluated, criteria that be attention in Passive House applications were tackled. In this context, three kindergarten samples that meet the features of passive homes in Sachsen, Germany, which have low solar energy potential but the highest passive home potential in Europe, were examined. This study is significant for pilot regions and increase in implement projects in countries with high solar potential like Turkey. Smart city applications and results were evaluated through the concept of sustainability, with examples from the world and our country. By examining<br />these applications in Sivas suggestions were developed. In the first stage of the study, the concept of smart city found in the literature and the effective factors in the emergence of this concept are explained. Population growth that emerged with rapid globalization has caused mobility especially in urban transportation, and the use of gasoline and diesel fueled vehicles has increased day by day. At the point of making cities sustainable and combating climate change, countries have started to use new technological transportation and alternative fuel systems to reduce dependence on oil and CO2 emissions in transportation. In this study using qualitative research method, green transportation practices at national and international level in the fight against sustainability and climate change were examined by literature review. In the context of data obtained from the official websites of TURKSTAT, Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and EGM Traffic Presidency, the number of motor vehicles in Turkey between 2002-2020, the distribution of automobiles by fuel type, the distribution of electric vehicles and electric cars (Aegean Region), greenhouse gas emissions and traffic accident statistics were analyzed. In the study, it is aimed to determine where Turkey is in a sustainable green transportation at the point of transition from fossil fuel transportation vehicles to low carbon transportation vehicles in the fight against climate change. Social determinants of health are non-medical factors that affect health status. One of these factors will be the concept of digital divide, which finds its place more and more day by day. The aim of this study is to examine the concept of digital divide from a public health perspective and to examine the effects of the digital divide in the field<br />of health.</p> <p>Methods: The study is a traditional review type and was carried out between March-May 2021 by examining academic databases and web pages. The web pages of international organizations and the web pages of the relevant ministries were examined. The terms of digital transformation, digital literacy, and telemedicine were also scanned and used in this publication.</p> <p>Results: Considering the resources scanned for the conceptual framework and the results of the literature review, the concepts and examples<br />related to the digital divide from the perspective of Public Health were examined as sub-titles.</p> <p>Discussion: Digital inequalities have an impact on the social determinants of health, but are also affected by these determinants. In the near future,<br />digital inequalities will independently become one of the determinants of health. The widespread and destructive effects make the people living in the cities and the future generations to live in unhealthy environmental environments. Living in healthy cities is the most natural right of every human being. Healthy cities should be inclusive, supportive and responsive to the different needs and expectations of their citizens. Ecosystem services are important for the creation and sustainability of these urban systems and for urban planning efforts. “Ecosystem services” is the name given to all of the products and services that ecosystems on the world provide to humans and other living things. Parks, gardens, cemeteries, urban forests, green roofs, wetlands, stream corridors, lakes and ponds in cities, along with natural areas and rural areas in the city periphery, are the main service providers directly or indirectly within the urban ecosystem. It is necessary to integrate ecosystem services with successful implementations in order to realize healthy and life quality-focused planning in cities. Therefore, alternative foods are being researched. This review aims to examine alternative food sources for the future with the current<br />scientific literature. Studies in Pubmed and Google Academic databases covering the years 2010-2021, which present nutritional alternatives<br />for the future, have been examined and compiled. Food alternatives for the future are examined in two groups as natural and biotechnological<br />alternatives. Natural alternatives are highly nutritious, edible insects and algae that have been consumed in different parts of the world for many<br />years. The efficiency of these resources is high, and their environmental damage is low. Alternatives obtained by biotechnological methods are foods<br />produced by genetic editing, enriched functional or superfoods, and synthetic meat. With the development of technology, the foods produced by<br />these methods and the demand for these foods have increased. It is anticipated that development in these areas will continue because they offer<br />solutions to various problems. It is known that the need for nutrients will increase with the increasing population in the future. Today, agriculture and animal husbandry also harm nature. Reducing this harm should be the priority when considering alternatives for the future. Sustainable, environmentally friendly, and efficient food production systems are needed. Alternative foods should be investigated extensively, and risk analysis should be done. The increasing amount of pollution has created irreparable effects on living things and natural resources, climate change has brought problems such as non-recyclable energy consumption, water scarcity, increasing waste consumption and the risk of depletion of natural resources. In this process, due to their structures and characteristics, cities and local governments have begun to emerge as actors that can be more effective in preparing policies on climate change and take action more quickly. At this point, networks were needed to guide cities for climate change policies, action plans, adaptation and mitigation. In this context, the (Covenant of Mayors - CoM), which contributes to the fight against global climate change by strengthening the cooperation of cities, such as sharing knowledge, experience, projects, financial support and exemplary implementation, is cited as an example to these networks. It is known that CoM, which provides opportunities to develop local scale solutions to the problem of climate change, guides the climate policies of local governments and accelerates the global studies. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the effects of the Covenant of Mayors on the climate policies of Eskişehir Tepebaşı Municipality. The effects of climate change have started to be felt more and more recently in the world and in this sense, increasing temperature values, irregularities in precipitation regimes and meteorological disasters threaten the future of the world and humanity. In addition, the rapidly increasing world population, industrialization and urbanization cause a problem due to the greenhouse effect of the pollutant gases released into the atmosphere. In this study, an evaluation of the studies on climate change has been made and with this evaluation, the general effects of the subject, its effects on the agricultural sector and plant protection are included. In Europe, nearly 73% of Turkey's population lives in urban areas, the population was 75.1%, according to data for 2018. In this case, the increase in dense construction in cities causes the absorption of sunlight and heat capacity from artificial surfaces to increase and also to a decrease in green areas. The heat absorbed from the building surfaces and accumulated on these surfaces can easily escape from the city center. In this case, the city is forced to change the climate and the people living in the cities to live in uncomfortable environmental conditions. One of the proposed solutions to the event that the heat trapped on the building surfaces during daytime, called the urban heat island, is returned to the outside environment in the evening is the creation of green areas on the building surfaces. Studies have shown that the green areas created on the building surfaces give more efficient results than the use of cold materials. With the roof and facade gardens to be created on the building surfaces in the cities, a healthier environment will be offered to the city people by supporting the reduction of the urban heat island effect. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the<br />effects of climate change on aquatic ecosystems, minimal living studies to protect water, smart cities, water sustainability, water conservation,<br />conservation and renewal of energy resources, and water footprint, which has become more popular recently. In this context, environmental, biological, ecological and water quality parameters of aquatic ecosystems were evaluated in the light of scientific data related to global warming.<br />In the seas of Turkey, changes in sea water temperature and water parameters have occurred as a result of climate changes due to global warming. Increases in the waters of some regions and increases in natural disasters have been observed. In some regions, the effects of withdrawal,<br />extinction and drought are observed in the waters, and accordingly, there are mass deaths and species that are in danger of extinction in the aquatic ecosystems. Due to the change in precipitation, surface, underground resources and drinking water are also adversely affected. Apart from all these, the increase in drought due to errors and ignorance in agricultural irrigation also increases the drought in the unconscious use of water in living areas and business areas. It is to reduce domestic water consumption in order to protect potable water resources, to take steps to reuse domestic wastewater treated and to reuse water used in homes, to benefit from developing technology. In fact, it is necessary to make use of smart home systems in homes by creating rainwater collection areas. To reduce water consumption in agriculture; It is important not to use or even abandon wild irrigation, to expand drip irrigation systems, to develop necessary administrative decisions about water sustainability and policy, and to make necessary laws and regulations.
